Sample interview questions: Can you provide an example of a time when you had to handle a disciplinary issue during an outdoor education activity?
Sample answer:
During a wilderness expedition with high school students, a participant repeatedly disregarded safety protocols by wandering away from the group and ignoring instructions. After multiple warnings, I pulled the student aside and had a private conversation.
I calmly explained the importance of adhering to safety guidelines for their well-being and the safety of others. I also emphasized the potential consequences of their actions, such as getting lost or putting the group in danger.
To address the student’s underlying motivation, I asked them why they were straying from the group. It turned out they were feeling anxious and isolated. Together, we developed strategies for managing their anxiety and staying connected with the group, such as assigning them a “buddy” and encouraging them to express their concerns openly.
