Cognitive load theory explains how the human brain processes and retains information. It postulates that the brain has two types of memory: working memory and long-term memory. Working memory can only hold a limited amount of information, and when it is overloaded, information can be lost or misprocessed. Long-term memory can store an unlimited amount of information, but it takes time and effort to transfer information from working memory to long-term memory.

In my therapy sessions, I apply cognitive load theory to help my clients learn more effectively. I do this by:

  • Breaking down information into smaller chunks. When information is presented in small, manageable chunks, it is easier for clients to understand and remember.
  • Using multiple modalities. I use a variety of teaching methods, such as visual aids, demonstrations, and hands-on activities, to help clients learn. This helps to reduce the cognitive load on working memory and allows clients to make connections between different pieces of information.
