Sample interview questions: Can you describe a time when you had to modify your teaching strategies to accommodate different levels of prior knowledge among adult learners?

Sample answer:

In my experience as an Adult Education Teacher, I have had to modify my teaching strategies to accommodate different levels of prior knowledge among learners. One notable instance occurred during a literacy course.

Firstly, I assessed the learners’ prior knowledge through a pre-assessment. This helped me gauge their reading and writing abilities, as well as their familiarity with basic literacy concepts. Based on the assessment results, I divided the class into two groups:

a) Beginners: Learners with limited prior knowledge and low literacy skills.
b) Intermediate: Learners with some literacy skills and experience.

For the beginners’ group, I adopted a highly structured and explicit teaching approach. I broke down literacy skills into smaller, manageable steps and provided ample practice opportunities through interactive activities and repetitive exercises. I also incorporated multisensory approaches to cater to different learning styles.
