I have had several experiences implementing assistive technology devices and software for students with disabilities during my time as a Teaching Substitute Paraprofessional. One particular experience that stands out is when I worked with a student who had a visual impairment. In order to support their learning needs, I collaborated with the special education team and recommended the use of a screen reader software.

After researching and consulting with the student’s parents and teachers, we selected a screen reader software that was compatible with the student’s device. I then worked closely with the student to teach them how to utilize the software effectively. We started with basic navigation commands and gradually progressed to more advanced features. Throughout this process, I provided continuous guidance and support to ensure the student’s understanding and proficiency in using the software.

Additionally, I have also implemented augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices for students with speech and language disabilities. In one instance, I worked with a student who had limited verbal communication skills. After assessing their needs, I recommended the use of a speech-generating device (SGD) that allowed them to communicate effectively with both peers and teachers.
