Sample interview questions: Can you describe a time when you had to work with a student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to develop appropriate behavior goals and accommodations?
Sample answer:
- Case Study:
I worked with a student, let’s call him Alex, who had a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and significant challenging behaviors, including aggression, self-injury, and property destruction.
- Collaboration with IEP Team:
I collaborated closely with Alex’s IEP team, which included his parents, general education teacher, special education teacher, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, and school psychologist.
- Assessment and Data Collection:
I conducted a comprehensive functional behavior assessment (FBA) to identify the antecedents and consequences maintaining Alex’s challenging behaviors. Data collection involved direct observations, interviews with stakeholders, and review of school records.
- Development of Behavior Goals:
Based on the FBA findings, I worked with the IEP team to develop specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) behavior goals. These goals focused on reducing the frequency and intensity of Alex’s challenging behaviors and increasing appropriate behaviors.
- Individualized Accommodations:
I also collaborated with the IEP team to develop individualized accommodations to support Alex’s access to the general education curriculum and participation in school activities. These accommodations included:
- Modified assignments
- Visual supports
- Sensory breaks
- Behavior intervention plan
- Social skills instruction
-
